December 8 2010 marked the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon, and just two days later, Yuri Pool and the McCartney Years made sure that we remembered the legacy of the legendary songwriter.
In the first of two shows at the Aeolian Hall in London, Yuri and the band brought back the brilliance, humour and musicianship of John Lennon. Yuri lives, eats, sleeps and breathes The Beatles, so when he organizes a tribute show, no detail is left to chance. The opening number was ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Night’ and as a fan, I was amazed at how Yuri was able to change his vocal style to mimic Lennon’s. He had his growl down pat, and the rest of the band pulled up the rear, making me feel like I was actually seeing the real Lennon in concert in New York City all those years ago. Not only does Yuri and the McCartney Years stay true to the songs and arrangements, the relationship with the audience makes the performance extra special. You can tell these men love what they’re doing, and who they’re doing it with. They laugh and make fun of one another, and breathe new life into songs that are now over 40 years old! Yuri makes sure to include the audience in banter and singalongs, which is what makes The McCartney Years extra special – you really feel that you are a part of the show, something special. Thanks to Yuri and the members of the McCartney Years, for keep the legacy of John, Paul, George and Ringo strong!
